Literature Analysis Three: The Black Unicorn by Terry Brooks

1) The story starts out with Ben Holiday, the king, the court wizard, and Ben's "girlfriend" all having a specific dream which actually feels more than a dream. Ben had a dream that his old friend from Earth, Miles, was being terrorized. The wizard has a dream that he found the books of magic which will make him more powerful. Ben's girlfriend who is a sylph, had a dream of the black unicorn of death. An evil wizard named Meeks who sold this magical kingdom to ben, changed ben's appearance so no one would know that he is the king. Miles from Earth ended up being okay in the end. The court wizard found the books of magic, but one of them had pages and pages of unicorn drawings. The other book had a large hole burned through its center. The Sylph found the black unicorn and tamed it. it seemed as though the black unicorn wasnt so evil after all. It was just an outsider and was scared. At the end of the story, the wizard meeks ends up dying and everything ends up just peachy!

2) There is no theme for the novel. It was written for entertainment,

3) a) When Ben Holiday went back to the real world, the tone became suspenseful. I was wondering what was going to happen the whole time!
   b) It was also suspenseful when their group faced meeks and the black unicorn helped them to destroy meeks.
    c) Lastly, It was suspenseful when Ben Holiday was turned into someone he wasnt be Meeks.
This whole book was suspenseful! It really made me want to know what was going to happen next which is probably why I read 200 pages in a day...

4) a)The black unicorn is a symbol for death.
    b) The book with all of the drawings of unicorns was suppose to symbolize all of the unicorns that went missing from the beginning of the world.
   c) An Allusion could possible be when the chapters switch off between the different characters'
points of view. It tells the audience certain things that the characters in the story dont know. (I think that's an allusion...)
    d) Point of View: The Author uses this to help explain what is happening to each of the different characters and what they are thinking.
    e) Plot is a literary term. Refer to the very first question for the plot of the story! :)
    f) The tone of the story is suspenseful.

CHARACTERIZATION:
1) Direct: a) "The cat's eyes gleamed emerald in the moonlight. it's coat was silver- gray except for black paws."
 b) "Stout, hairy bodies which were clothed in what looked like salvation army rejects."
Indirect: a)"Bits and pieces of the glow had begun to take shape. Dancing, whirling, lifting against the torchlight. The had begun to assume the forms of fairy creatures."

2) The authors syntax and diction changes when the story switches off between the different points of view of the characters. Depending on where the characters are, it changes the tone of the story.

3 and 4) The protagonist has feelings and emotions, is scared of certain things and is brave. Ben Holiday resembles a very real person in this story. I think he is a person I would like to meet so he can show me his magic kingdom. :)
